About Qatar
QATAR.. is taking its place on the world's stage ! Qatar is situated at the very heart of the Arabian Gulf.
It is flanked by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and across the Gulf, Iran. It occupies a peninsula projecting approximately 160km 100 ml) into the Arabian Gulf. It is 80 km at its widest point with a total area of 11,437 sq. km (4,416 sq. ml) and includes a number of islands.
The population boosted by large numbers of immigrant workers and professionals approximately 885,000 on July 2006, an average annual increase of 6% during the previous seven years. This annual figure is anticipated to increase over the next decade. Qatar is an independent Arab state and despite its relative small geographical size has played an important role in the promotion of Arab interests to the developed World. It is a member of the GCC, OPEC, The United Nations, The International Monetary Fund, The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and The World Trade Organisation.
Historically, revenues from oil have provided the fuel for Qatar's development into the modern progressive state it is today. Its oil reserves have increased substantially over the past five years with proven reserves estimated to last over 60 years. This natural bounty is soon to be supplemented by an even greater one.
Qatar's North Gas Field is the largest nonassociated gas field in the World. Proven reserves are estimated at over 900 trillion cubic feet, which is the equivalent to about 162 billion barrels of oil. This is over 15% of the world's total and will be sufficient to support planned production for over 200 years. Exports of LNG to the Far East, Europe and the USA should reach 60 million tons per annum by 2010. Qatar also intends to export gas to neighbouring UAE and Oman through The Dolphin Project, which it is hoped, will provide the gateway for the creation of a GCC gas grid, originating from Qatar. This will involve the construction of a 400 km subsea pipeline from Qatar's North Field to Taweelah in Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali in Dubai. This is in addition to the massive projects now in place to extract and convert the gas into LNG.
Gas is the key to Qatar's long term export prosperity and is urrently used for internal power consumption and as feed stock to produce various value added products for both domestic consumption and export. Many of these plants are now undertaking or planning considerable expansions in the near future. After a $850 million expansion project, the refining capacity of Qatar Petroleum Refinery (formerly NODCO) is now 137,000 barrels per day.
As Qatar's Gas is brought further on stream, there are a number of other major industrial plants due to start up. Qatofin - Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) Plant with a 450,000 tpa capacity. Ras Laffan Ethylene Cracker (RLEC) Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) Project Aluminium Smelter Project - A $3 billion project with initial capacity of around 570,000 tpa.
The Oil and Gas Sector accounts for approximately 60% of GDP. Other major contributors to the economy are Services, Manufacturing , Finance, Insurance, Property,
Building and Construction. GDP is now at record levels averaging a very healthy 18.9% or doubling over the last five years. A figure which is likely to rise even higher in the foreseeable future. Against this backdrop it is unsurprising that major investment in infrastructure projects, health, education and tourism are also taking place both in the public and private sectors.
New Doha International Airport Work has already started on Phase 1 which will increase present capacity to 12 million passengers by 2009. Further expansion half of which will be on land reclaimed from the sea will see this figure rise to 50 million by 2015. It will be the first airport specifically designed to handle the world's largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus A380-800. Ras Abu Fontas B (RAF-B) Ras Abu Fontas is Qatar's primary source of power generation and water desalination. Phase 1 expansion will increase capacity to 990 megawatts. Phase 2 will almost double present desalination capacity to 60 million gallons a day.
Doha Expressway A $800 million highway project with 24 interchanges. The Qatar Government has done an extraordinary job in implementing a broad and balanced development programme. Yet many feel that this is only the beginning, with Qatar poised to take its own more prominent position on the world's stage. This then is the conducive business environment that TEYSEER has played such an integral role in for the last three decades. Its trading activities are established to take full advantage of the opportunities ahead. Its engineering based contracting and construction skills will continue to be challenged with new projects and expansions to existing plants. It will ensure that its many service oriented activities will continue to provide the highest international standards of quality and customer satisfaction. It too is ready to face the future with supreme confidence but without complacency .
